I believe Peter screwed up the story with all the crap on the island, but still, the effects are amazing.

Such as?
I didn't see anything that seemed out of place. You got a film crew on an island full of prehistoric megafauna and natives that like sacrificing pretty ladies to their Kong. So far, pretty darn true to the 1933 original. Just with better special effects.

It may be true to the original but is it really a smart thing to do career wise? He's fresh off one of the most highly aclaimed movies of all time and he then releases, this. Peter's a bit more talented than that, I think he could come up with a deeper, more sofisticated plot.

Hehehe. You're kidding, right? Yeah, I'm sure after this is released, no one's going to hire him. LOL!
I really don't think Peter Jackson has to worry too much about his career. He can afford to do whatever he likes at this point.
My guess is, if it weren't for that horrid 1976 remake, he'd have left it alone, but after that atrocious 1976 remake, someone had to redo it right, so now King Kong gets a proper remake. Considering how incredibly influential a film it was, it's about bloody time.
The only real gotcha is, somehow Peter's got to make it so that King Kong isn't the only memorable character in the film. That'll be tough, considering the starting material he has to work with. We'll see how well he does. But if he can make a great movie out of what was ultimately a cheesy monster flick, that'll say a lot about his talent as a film maker...

I entirely agree with you Dreamsmith, but really, I think he can do better than King Kong. I believe he should do something like a drama or a comedy. Or he could try something where actually made up the plot instead of using someone else's ideas and makeing it 2x better.
Yes, at this point in time he can do whatever he wants and no one will give a damn, as long as he makes money, and he obviously will.

Good film makers almost always use someone else's ideas. Peter Jackson is not a writer, and he shouldn't try to pretend that because he's a good filmmaker, he's qualified to write -- otherwise you end up with drivel like George Lucas produces. Great filmmaker, now if only he'd stop trying to be a writer and let real writers do that job.
(Come on, admit it -- Star Wars sucks and you know it. If it weren't for the great filmmaking, you'd lose interest in the atrociously bad storyline and abysmal dialog almost instantly. Heck, even with the great filmmaking, it was a struggle to maintain interest in the latest three, the story was so bad.)
But it wouldn't hurt if he started looking for stories that we haven't all already seen or read, even if some of us have (e.g. Fight Club was a book before it was a movie, but an obscure enough one that it was a fresh tale to most movie-goers -- I'm sure there are plenty of obscure little stories out there that could be brought to life by the right filmmaker).

Guys coming up with a new plot is incredibly hard.
I guarantee that if you come up with a plot that's not completely off the wall, it has probably been used at one point somewhere before.
Edit: Personally I would love to see the Soveriegn Stone Trilogy by Margarett Weiss and Tracy Hickmann made into a movie. But I doubt that'll happen.

I think it's your personel taste, to some, Star Wars had a phonemonal plot. I think it's okay, but removing that, everywith was fantastic except episode I & II which were a let down.

I'd rather someone remake the original Godzilla, and not those independence day guys either.
Godzilla > King Kong
